El is a transdisciplinary project (sound, science, performance art), addressing contemporary issues with an activist spirit. Its aim is to translate today’s challenges into the language of art — and to think through them using artistic means. This new way of perceiving the world and putting it into perspective can open up new paths for understanding and engaging with the issues we face today.

One example is climate change: it is a fact, yet the measures being taken are still insufficient. The problem is not a lack of technological solutions, but a lack of political will — the will to change things so that our planet remains liveable for everyone. El approaches the consequences of this catastrophe for humanity from a scientific perspective (Sara is a meteorologist), but also from an emotional one.

Another example: in German, for decades, no distinction was made between the external and internal parts of the female sex organs. The vagina was commonly referred to as the “Scheide”, while the entire area was called the “Schambereich” (literally, the “area of shame”). It is only in recent years that a distinction has been made between the “vulva” and the “vagina.” How much further should we go now? Should we continue to use terms such as “Schamlippen” (“lips of shame”), or should we find our own words to explore and honour the female sex, which should no longer be associated with shame? El thus also pays tribute to the vulva.

Living together is a daily struggle. It is not even easy to “manage” ourselves. El seeks to encourage people to treat themselves and others with fairness and respect. It is important to add that El does not aim to preach or moralise, but simply strives to be authentic, honest, and alert.
